Math: Sorting Lesson

Standard - 1.4.3 - Classify and sort familiar plane and solid objects by position, shape, size, roundness, and other attributes.

Materials:

  • Math student workbooks (pp. 31, 32)
  • Math teacher's edition
  • Attribute shapes to cut out
  • Transparency of practice 1-11
  • Overhead counters
  • Bags of sorting items (plastic lids, milk jug rings, marker caps, etc.)

Objective:
The students will be able to sort objects into at least two different groups.

Motivation:
I will put the red and yellow circle counters on the overhead and ask the students how we can put the counters in two groups so that each group is the same in some way. I will then sort the counters into a red group and a yellow group.

Goal for learner:
Tell students that they will be learning how to sort objects into groups.

Teach content:

  • Ask the students how we could sort the class into two groups. Have them get up and show me how they would sort.
  • Go over transparency of practice 1-11 on the overhead with the students.
  • Put the students into four groups. Give each group a bag of objects to sort.
  • Give students about five minutes to sort the objects and have them explain how they sorted. They will then sort the objects another way.
  • Have the students open their math workbooks to page 31 and give them the worksheet of attribute shapes to cut out. They will then sort their shapes on page 31 into two groups and tell me how they sorted them.
  • Let students complete page 32 on their own.

Practice:
The students will be sorting themselves into two groups and working with other students to sort various objects. They will also be completing pages 31 and 32 in their math workbooks.

Evaluation:
I will walk around while the students are working in their groups to make sure they understand the concept. I will also collect and look over page 32 from their workbooks.

Closing:
I will ask the students if there is any other way they can sort themselves and see how many ways they can come up with.
