Science: Taste

Materials:

  • Book, Tasting Things
  • Label the tongue worksheet
  • Label the tongue transparency
  • Lemon pieces
  • Raisins
  • Saltine crackers

Objective:
The students will be able to identify a taste by sampling different kinds of food.

Motivation:
I will have the students come sit on the green carpet and ask them what they know about tasting. I will then read the book Tasting Things.

Goal for learner:
Tell the students that today we are going to be learning about our fourth sense for the week, taste.

Teach content:

  • Ask students how certain foods taste when they eat them.
  • Tell students we have taste buds all over our tongues
  • Tell students the taste buds are sweet, sour, salty, and bitter and that a certain area on our tongue tastes each kind.
  • Pass out the label the tongue worksheet and have the students label the taste buds while I do it with them on the overhead.
  • Give each student a lemon piece, saltine cracker, and a raisin to taste.
  • Write the taste buds on the board and have students tell me what kind of taste each food sample has.

Practice:
The students will be completing the label the tongue worksheet with me and they will be tasting different kinds of food and telling me what kind of taste each food has.

Evaluation:
I will collect the label the tongue worksheet to make sure each student did it along with me.

Closing:
Ask students what other foods are salty, sour, bitter, and sweet and make a list on the board.
