Language: Capital Letters Lesson

Standard - 1.6.7 Capitalize the first word of a sentence, names of people, and the pronoun I.

Materials:

  • Language student workbooks (p.36)
  • Language teacher's edition
  • Daily language practice transparency
  • Upper and lower case letter cards
  • Capital letter worksheet

Objective:
The students will be able to identify words that should be capitalized in sentences and write capital letters correctly.

Motivation:
I will have the students turn to page 36 in their language workbooks and have them practice writing each capital letter once.

Goal for learner:
Tell students we will be learning when to use capital letters in sentences.

Teach content:

  • Do daily language practice transparency.
  • Put my capital letter cards in the pocket holder on the board.
  • Give each student two lower case letter cards and have them one by one come up and put their lower case letter next to the matching capital letter.
  • Ask students when we use capital letters. Explain that capital letters are always used at the beginning of a sentence, names are always capitalized, and the letter I is always capitalized.
  • Write two sentences on the board, one with a capital letter and one without. Ask students which one is correct. Do a few more examples of this.

Practice:
I will give the students the capital letter worksheet and tell them to circle the words that should be capitalized in the sentences.

Evaluation:
I will collect the capital letter worksheets and grade them to see if the students understand the concept.

Closing:
I will write one more wrong sentence on the board and have the students correct it.
